Who am I?

Let me help you to prepare for academic success

I'm a passionate teacher and educational consultant with 15-years experience of working in Higher Education.

I have spent years teaching first-year university students about study skills. But now I'm interested in seeing how these skills can be moved 'upstream'. How can we better equip students at school with the skills they will need for Higher Education and 21st-century success?

This mission was the starting point for  PreparED.

I've worked at universities almost my whole career. I love what I do. But one aspect of working with undergraduates that I've always found  difficult is when they tell me that they're dropping out of their studies. Very often, this has nothing to do with their interest or ability in the subject they've chosen to study. Frequently, it's because the skills they require for academic success at the university level are under-developed or they are under-prepared for what is expected of them.

And this can apply to anyone. Straight-A students who struggle to adapt to the independence of university or haven't had to push themselves before can have as hard a time as students for whom organisation and time management has always been an issue.  This is where I can help.

My ambition is to provide support for the transition to university to as many students as possible. Luckily, Lënster Lycée International School, Luxembourg feels the same and since September 2024, I've been offering PreparED for study and PreparED for university there.

This is a great start. But I'm keen to see the project grow to reach as many students as possible.

The PreparED programmes

01

Why PreparED for study?

Because for some studying is easy, but for many it's not.

Because strategies that worked when you were younger or for regular tests are less effective for important end-of-year exams.

By making learning to learn competences more visible in the school curriculum at an early stage, we can help to develop the knowledge and strategies that  can support academic success.

This is fundamental in the first year of secondary school and in preparing for exams.

We cover:

  • The study cycle
  • Study strategies
  • Time management
  • Planning
  • Motivation
  • Preparing for tests

02

Why PreparED for university?

Because it's not always clear what life at university will be like.

Because essential skills need to be developed quickly to reduce the stress of the first year.

These workshops look at students' real-life experiences of uni to help school-leavers understand what Higher Education will mean for them.

We cover:

  • Expectations, mindset and adapting to uni life
  • Lecture skills
  • Seminar and lab skills
  • Independent work and preparing for research
  • Collaborative work

My objective is to provide support and resources either inside or outside of school to help to support the transition to university through practical workshops.

03

Why PreparED for publication and research communication?

The pressure on doctoral students and early-career researchers to publish their work and present at conferences is high.

I understand and can empathise with this pressure. I've developed strategies to help support post-grads communicate their research in a positive, authentic and discipline-specific way. I'll help you find your voice and communicate effectively with your target audience in your texts and presentations.

I provide personalised support and feedback on research papers and presentation scripts.

Preparation is everything.
