  • Why should I do this course?

University life and university study are not just a continuation of school. There are distinct differences.

Research and my own experience of teaching first-year students tells us that not all students are well-prepared for the transition to university.

The problem is that this can be stressful. Finding the first few weeks of university a challenge can affect your experience of what should be an exciting time.

This programme helps to prepare you for what university life and study will be like. It will manage your expectations, give you practical tools, and help put you in a Higher Education mindset.

And why is this a benefit?

It means you can concentrate more on the great adventure that university can be!

  • Aren't there other courses like this?

Yes, there are university preparation courses offered at presigious universities across Europe and beyond.

    However, they are expensive.

This summer school has been designed to deliver the key information and tools required by first-years without the need to travel to another country or pay huge amounts of money.

  • Won't I learn all of this once I arrive at university?

    Possibly.

Many univeristies provide excellent introductory courses for first-semester students.

    But not all.

Some subjects are great at supporting their first-year students.

    But not all.

Sometimes, courses which deal with upgrading your study skills to a university level are only offered to students who also need to improve their language level. If you're not one of those, you may miss out on these courses.

The other key point is that even if such a course is provided once you're at university, you are having to learn those skills and take in all that information whilst also dealing with a whole new life.

That's a lot to take on at once!

This programme offers you the chance to think about and discuss what uni will be like and the skills required before arriving.

This means you can hit the ground running when you arrive at uni.

  • How good does my English need to be for this summer school?

You will need B2 English for this two-day workshop.

If you have learnt English at school, that won't be an issue for you.

I am a trained English-language teacher and used to helping learners understand more complex language, so there's no need to feel anxious about this..

I can also translate into German and can always provide materials in French, if you are concerned about understanding.

So don't let your English hold you back!

  • Is lunch provided?

Light refreshments (coffee, tea, biscuits) will provided during the day, but no lunch will be provided.

However, you can use the restaurant at the youth hostel or bring your own lunch and enjoy it in the garden!
